Many of the challenging problems related to the design, production, and application of new materials and products, as well as the associated environmental and health issues, depend on an understanding of materials on a microscopic scale. The microscopic surface texture of even a very large object, the arrangement and distribution of atoms within the object, and the changes in these properties over time, and with use, are all potentially important in understanding the object's ultimate value, performance, and application.
The scientists in JMTC's Microstructural Analysis group are experts in characterizing materials and objects on a microscopic scale. Employing the latest techniques in Electron Microscopy, Atomic Force Microscopy, optical microscopy and X-ray diffraction analysis they are able to determine the composition, morphology, and structure of materials on a scale ranging from centimeters down to a few atomic diameters.
Years of experience have created a broad range of expertise in materials characterization and the following specialized areas:
- The production, recovery and analysis of particles and fibers used in in-vivo and in-vitro toxicological testing.
- Characterization of environmental particulates.
- Identification and measurement of crystalline silica in bulk and airborne materials.
- Quantitative and qualitative mineralogical analysis.
- Evaluation and characterization of the degradation and corrosion of glass and ceramic materials in a wide range of environments.
The scientists in the Microstructural Analysis Group work closely with both the customer and other analytical groups at JMTC to identify and define the problem, collect the appropriate data utilizing a broad range of fully integrated analytical and testing techniques, and provide the evaluation, interpretation, and synthesis of the data necessary to answer the critical questions.
